...ancient history, a modern city, the pearl of Dalmatia...
Split - heart of Adriatic
Today, Split is the economic and cultural center of Dalmatia. The second largest city in Croatia after Zagreb and one of the oldest cities in Europe. A city with more than 1,700 years of history dating back to the Roman Empire.
According to legend - the very name of the city derives its roots from the Greek word "Aspalathos" - which is the name of a plant with the Croatian name BRNISTRA - which grows on the slopes of all the hills around Split. A bushy plant with beautiful yellow flowers, during the spring it turns the entire Split area into a bright yellow color.
An architectural jewel and the most famous landmark of Split, the palace of the Roman emperor Diocletian. The palace was built by his order at the beginning of the 4th century. Here, the retired emperor spent the rest of his life in peace and gardening. According to legend, he especially loved cabbage.
A large part of the Palace still exists today - in a fairly preserved form. In the middle of the stone Palace there are many other buildings that have been perfectly preserved to this day.
The centuries-old walls preserve a rich history, and it is very easy to feel a part of those times.
The streets in the city are stone and winding like a labyrinth. Almost every street has a restaurant and a hotel. People come there with their big suitcases, which looks colorful and very typical of Split.
Moving things in the city is done by electric carts, because such narrow streets cannot be passed by an ordinary car. This is how goods are delivered to stores, this is how utility companies work....
The city has several well-known beautiful beaches - Bačvice, Žnjan... Open-air summer cinema, beautiful view. In this part of the city there are children's and sports fields, a swimming pool, an amphitheater for music festivals and concerts, and a parking lot.
The business card of the city is the promenade - RIVA - with palm trees, cafes and restaurants.
The city has a rich cultural and social life. Museums, galleries, city attractions, magnificent palaces, fun and educational events, wine tastings... The place for a walk is Marjan Park.
The small, beautiful Trg Republike is located in the heart of Split, and the locals call it "Prokurative".
The square is surrounded on three sides by magnificent classical buildings. The square has long been a venue for city events, holidays and festivals that attract artists from various parts of the world.
In winter, you can skate here, but of course you won't see real ice in Dalmatia.
The population is about 200,000 people, with the surrounding areas 500,000. The number of tourists is over 2 million annually.
The pride of Croatia is the football club Hajduk from Split.
Locals flirtatiously complain about the annual crowds of tourists, but this place is really worth a visit.
The ancient city has not turned into a theater scene, but lives a bright, modern and meaningful life.
An ideal place and starting point for planning a trip.
