About CRES island
The island of Cres, the largest Adriatic island (area equal to that of the island of Krk - 405.78 km2), is located in the northern part of the Kvarner Gulf. In the south, in Osor, it is connected by a drawbridge to the island of Lošinj.
Cres is a hilly island 66 km long and 2 to 12 km wide. The coast of the island is indented and about 247.7 km long and abounds with many bays and pebble beaches on its western and southern parts, while the northern and eastern parts are crowned with steep and rough rocks. The highest peaks of the island are Gorice (648m) and Sis (638m).
As a special point of interest, we should point out the unusual natural phenomenon of the freshwater lake Vrana, with an area of 5.75 square kilometers and a volume of about 220 million m3. The level of the freshwater lake is above the level of the surrounding sea, and its bottom is below sea level at a depth of 74m.
Cres is characterized by great contrasts between the northern sub-Mediterranean part with tall and dense forests of honey oak, hornbeam, elm and chestnut, and the central and southern Mediterranean part, which is abundant in pastures and dense maquis.
The great wealth of flora (about 1,300 species) and animal life, with an exceptional number of endemic and relict species, represents a real challenge for nature lovers. Cres is also one of the last habitats of a very rare bird - the griffon vulture. After several years of scientific research, two colonies on the island of Cres where they live were declared "special ornithological reserves".
